Medigap Plan F offers the most comprehensive coverage available among Medicare Supplement plans.
It covers 100% of Medicare-approved out-of-pocket costs, including:
• Part A hospital deductible
• Part B deductible
• Part B excess charges
• Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (including up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted)
• Part B coinsurance or copayments
• First three pints of blood
• Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
• 80% of foreign travel emergency care (up to plan limits)
Because of its comprehensive coverage, Plan F has historically been a popular choice for those who want minimal out-of-pocket exposure.
Plan F is no longer available to individuals who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. This means the plan is now in a closed risk pool, limited to those who were eligible for Medicare prior to that date.
As a result, premiums for Plan F have tended to increase at a faster pace compared to other plans, since no younger, newly eligible members are entering the pool. For this reason, it’s important to carefully evaluate long-term cost sustainability when considering this option.
While Plan F provides the highest level of coverage, we typically review alternative options—such as Plan G—that offer strong coverage and may provide better long-term value.
