Q. What is Medicare?

A. Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older or those with disabilities.

Q. Who’s Eligible for Medicare?

A.  Individuals aged 65 years and eligible for Social Security benefits; Individuals who have received Social Security Disability (SSD) for 24 months; Individuals with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS, may be eligible without 24 month waiting period for SSD.

Q. How and when do I sign up?

A. Three months prior to your eligibility month, you can sign up online at www.socialsecurity.gov, in person at your local Social Security office or by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213.

Q. If I didn’t enroll at age 65, can I still enroll now?

A. If you delayed signing up due to employment, you may sign up using a Special Election Period.

Q. If I receive Social Security Disability checks, am I eligible for Medicare?

A. Yes, if you have received a Social Security Disability check for at least 24 months.
